how to sew a skirt…

easy skirt tutorial

A skirt is about the easiest thing to sew. It is essentially a tube with hems.

To determine the size, simply measure your waist and double it. This works for all people sizes - kids and grown ups.

For the length, you will need to determine how long you would like it and then add the length of the rolled hem and the elastic casing.

So for the example below:

  • the waist of the child was 21”.

  • I wanted the skirt to be 13” long.

  • the elastic is 1-1/4” wide, so I added 1.75” to the top. (1/4” for folded raw edge and 1'-1/2” for the ealstic).

  • I prefer a wide hem so I added 2.5”. (1/2” folded raw edge and 2” hem)

I added pockets! I had planned on the pocket stripes having the opposite direction of the skirt, but I completely forgot! Sigh,

Find the pocket template HERE. Print the pattern at 100% US letter size.

Here are photos of the entire process!
