Interfacing your dolls
What do all 3 of these dolls have in common?
By the title of this post, I am sure you have guessed it! INTERFACING!
I do not use interfacing often. My most preferred skin base for dolls is quilters cotton and it is rather stable. However, sometimes a beautiful linen comes along or soft vintage fabrics that need a little support.
I use lightweight WOVEN interfacing - nothing special. Just whatever the local fabric store has in stock. Doll making is much more forgiving than garment making and as long as the interfacing is a lightweight woven, you should be good. Medium weight will be too heavy!
If you are asking WHY one would use it… Fabrics such as linen have stretching tendencies that can alter the shape of your doll as you stuff and shape it. Interfacing adds just enough stability to avoid a misshapen head.
Another great use, is that it can stop little fibres of stuffing from poking through the doll over time. I find this only to be a problem on really dark, lighter weight fabrics.
To add interfacing, simply use the doll body pattern piece to cut the interfacing. Press to the wrong side of the fabric using the interfacing brands instructions. Done!
Happy making!
