Handmade Witch Doll

The spooky season is almost here!

Personally, I do not find witches spooky. I rather like them. Historically speaking, they were healers that were cast out from society because they threatened the precious male role and ego of the times. Years ago, I read the book ‘In Defence of Witches’ by Mona Chollet and the intro alone is fascinating, if not horrific in the details and its effects on perceptions today. I highly recommend the book.

Back to dolls! I made this darling witch with the Greta Pocket Doll Pattern and increased the printer size to 130%. Keep in mind to increase the seam allowances on the arms and legs to 1/2” if you increase the printer size, otherwise the appendages are rather wide.

For her hair, I was in quite a state of indecision… nothing felt right. Until I remembered I had saved scraps of raw silk from when I made my eldest daughter’s grad dress. It was the PERFECT fit.

The boots are from the Peacoat, Beret and Boots Clothing Patterns for the Greta Pocket Doll. I printed the pattern at 130%, and then trimmed a scant 1/4” from the edges.

I will include instructions on how to make the felt witch hat soon!
